Whether you’re just starting out on your business venture, or have been in the field for some time, there’s always a bit of room for improvement.
If you’re struggling for inspiration as we head into 2024, we’ve compiled some nifty tips below to help you on your way.
Set SMART goals
Many of us begin the new year full of fresh ideas, yet over time, these can fade away into the recesses of our mind as life begins to take over again (along with that dusty old gym pass).
By setting thoughtful, SMART goals, you are more likely to obtain your objectives, given that it requires you to lay out a plan. In this context, SMART stands for:
Specific
By clearly outlining your goals and what you hope to achieve, you can begin to build a better picture of how you’re going to get there, and the steps you need to take to make this happen.
Measurable
If there is a way to measure your achievements – for example, by seeing an increase in your brand’s social media following or subscribers – then this can help bolster your efforts as you strive for different benchmarks. Don’t be discouraged if this doesn’t happen overnight – these things take time. If something’s not working, don’t be afraid to try something new.
Achievable
This is the part where you can give yourself a reality check, and ask yourself, “Is this goal really achievable?” It might be that you want to triple your income, or have a best-selling book published by the end of the year – while these things are possible, it takes a lot of work to get to that point, and you should perhaps dial down your expectations to be a bit more rooted in reality, to avoid disappointment. We love your enthusiasm, though!
Relevant
Here’s a good time to pause and reflect on whether your goals truly align with your business and its values. It can be easy to go off on a tangent with goal setting, especially when the New Year seems so full of possibility – we hear you. Just make sure you understand the purpose of your future goal, and whether it will actually bring meaning to you – or just tire you out unnecessarily.
Time-bound
It can be so easy when goal setting to say, “I’ll do it later”, or “I still want to achieve this – it’s just not the right time”. If you truly want to make your business’s resolutions happen, you need to be putting steps into place that are grounded in reality.
Setting yourself a timeline is a great way to do this. By giving yourself challenges or goals over the course of say, 3, 6 or 9 months, you can look back afterwards and be able to see just how far you’ve come – even if they felt like baby steps at the time. Goals, particularly big ones, are like marathons – you just need to keep putting one foot in front of the other.
