Making sure the images you are uploading to your website are not too big is essential, as larger images take up too much space on your website hosting server and can result in your website taking longer to load, creating a bad user experience.
Resizing your images before uploading them to your site will make sure you don’t have any problems with your website in the future, but what if you don’t have access to Adobe Photoshop?
The below guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to resize your images without using Photoshop, ensuring your images are optimised for page speed and are not too much of a drain on the web server.
How to check the current size of your image
This is the first thing you need to do. Go to the image in your Files and right-click on it. Then select ‘Properties’ from the menu.
This will then load up the following screen:
The size of your image is displayed here.
How to resize images below 5MB
Let’s start with smaller images. If your image is less than 5MB in size, you can use the website Tinypng.com to upload it.
All you need to do is click on the image upload box at the top of the page.
Once you have done this, the following window will appear:
You then need to search for your image and click the ‘Open’ button.
The image will then be shown on the site as being uploaded, which looks like the below:
Once the image has been uploaded, the progress bar will show the status as ‘Compressing’.
Once this is done, the site will tell you that it is finished, and you will then be able to download the image. To do this, click the download button.
You can then upload the image to your website.
How to resize images above 5MB
If your image is more than 5MB in size, use Compressjpeg.com instead.
You first need to click the ‘Upload Files’ button.
You will then be asked to select the image you wish to compress. Find the image and click ‘Open.’
The image will then be uploaded and compressed. Once this is complete, the website will show the below. Click the ‘Download’ button.
The image will be downloaded to your device. You will then need to check the image size again – if it’s still greater than 1MB, you will need to click the image. This will expand the image underneath the download box. Scroll down past the download section and you will come to the below screen:
You will then need to adjust the Quality number on the right.
It is recommended to set the quality to around 40. Once this has been done, click ‘Apply.’
Now, scroll up and click the ‘Download’ button again to download the smaller version of the image.
Once you have downloaded the image, it will be ready for you to upload to your website.
