There are many different theories to how you can ensure that your website ranks in a UK search in Google. The problem with these theories is that Google is constantly changing its algorithm, so what works today may not work tomorrow, and what worked two years ago… well, you can guess that part!
So, if you have a website and you want to rank in a UK search, how do you do it?
Firstly, if you have a .co.uk domain you shouldn’t have any problems at all. Your website should rank fine a UK specific search, so long as your SEO is up to scratch and you haven’t done anything untoward of course.
However, if you have a .com or .net domain does this mean you can’t rank within Google for a UK search? Not at all. This is where the rules begin to change though. It used to be the case that if you hosted your .com domain inside the UK, on a UK server, you’d rank fine for a pages from the UK search in Google. This isn’t necessarily true now though.
You can find your .com domain won’t rank within Google for a UK search. What causes this and how do you fix it?
The problem lies with the sites that link to your site. If your links come from websites that are hosted outside the UK or are other country specific TLDs (top level domains) then the country that your website is affiliated to will become blurred for Google.
Don’t despair and switch to a .co.uk domain though. You simply need to ensure that you have quality websites linking to you; quality, relevant websites.
