Has your website traffic dropped in the past week?

Google has announced that the May 2022 core update is currently being rolled out and will take around one to two weeks to fully roll out. For some website owners, that might mean a drop in website traffic, but why is this?

Several times per year, Google release core algorithm updates to help improve the quality of the content displayed in searches, and help searchers find the information they are looking for. This means websites may sometimes see a drop in organic search traffic while the new algorithm update takes place, as this is when Google is evaluating how well your website performs in search results.

If your website traffic does drop, it doesn’t necessarily mean that there is something wrong with a page on your website, or that you have violated Google’s Webmaster Guidelines – it could just be a fluctuation caused by a core algorithm update. The best step to take is to make sure that the content you are writing for your website is focused on quality and gives value to visitors, as this is what the Google algorithm wants to reward.

If you are hit by a drop in traffic around the time of a core algorithm update, Google has released a few questions to ask yourself about your content, including:

• Does the content have any spelling or stylistic issues?
• Was the content produced well?
• Does the content display well on mobile devices?
• If you were to think like your target market, would you go away thinking that the content you have on your site is written by someone who is an expert who has enthusiasm for the topic?
