Google+ uses conference to roll out changes

Google has revealed a host of updates to its social media offering, Google+. The changes were announced at the company’s recent Google I/O conference.

The developments include an overhaul of the site’s layout, with users now offered a fresh multi-column design for the site’s news feed, Google+ Stream. With this, users will be able to see as many as three content columns at the same time; though this will depend on the device being used.

The search giant expanded on the changes in its Google+ blog, where it revealed that improvements will also be made to the appearance of videos and photos. This increasing emphasis on visual content is something many brands are choosing to take advantage of by shifting internet marketing budgets accordingly.

The site’s use of hashtags is also set to be enhanced. Users will now be presented with related hashtags when they post something – allowing them to further explore other topics. Also, each post which has multiple tags will have more than one corresponding button.

A recent report from GlobalWebIndex revealed that Google+ has become the world’s second most accessed social network with more than 359m users. This news came after it was announced that Facebook, which is at the top of the popularity tree, is expecting to hit 1bn active users by the end of this year.

As a result of this huge popularity, business owners can’t afford to ignore the major social networks when it comes to boosting online presence. Alongside a well-planned SEO strategy, sites like Google+ work wonders for many firms, big and small.
