Scientists have discovered that Google’s algorithm can play an integral role in the design of new drugs in the combat against disease. The algorithm is used by Google Search to locate relevant pages for a search query. Scientists have discovered that the algorithm can calculate chemical reactions.
The discovery was made by scientists located at the University of Arizona and Washington State University. The algorithm has been used by an associate chemistry professor, Aurora Clark at Washington State University in the prediction of chemical reactions.
The algorithm for Google Search compares web pages with hyperlinks. A web page which has a large number of links which are incoming is perceived by the algorithm to have a higher relevance than a web page, which has a lower number of incoming links. The web page with a higher number of incoming links is more likely to retain the web user and be of relevance. During a phone interview, Clark said:
“The way in which Google tallies votes of confidence for Web pages is based on their connectivity. The connectivity, as measured by the number of links to the Web page, dictates the probability that the Web surfer will stay at, or leave, the Web page. We’re doing the same thing.”
Clark further stated that understanding the organisation of molecules can be of help when creating new medicines. Google are used to being a feature in search engine optimisation, but a spokesman for Google said the company goal was to help people gain knowledge, which is certainly true for the scientists.
