Google rolls out spam update

Google rolls out spam update

Google has announced that a new spam algorithm will start being released this week. The update will take at least two weeks to be rolled out across multiple languages.

The new spam algorithm will be more efficient at identifying and nullifying link spam. Google has given warning to site owners that ranking changes will happen due to this update:

“In our continued efforts to improve the quality of the search results, we’re launching a new link spam fighting change today — which we call the “link spam update”. Sites taking part in link spam will see changes in Search as those links are re-assessed by our algorithms.”

Google has provided the following advice to site owners on linking within content to make sure that they are not affected negatively by this update:

Affiliate links

Affiliate links are a popular way for websites to monetise their traffic. Google asks that if your website is using affiliate links, you make sure that the links all have the rel=”sponsored” tag for Google to understand that the link is an affiliate link.

Sponsored and guest posts

Sponsored and guest posts are another common way websites can use to monetise their traffic. These articles are written by an author of one website, but the article is published on another website. Google recommends the following tags in links for sponsored and guest posts:

– Sponsored posts: rel=”sponsored”
– Guest posts: rel=”nofollow”

At Engage Web, we offer search engine optimisation (SEO) management, and we can make sure that you’re not negatively affected by updates like this. If you’d like to find out more about how we can help your business, get in touch and speak with our friendly team.
