According to latest figures released by comScore, an industry tracker, Google is still the leading search engine. While Google rivals Bing and Yahoo struggle to challenge the leading search engine and trail far behind, Google retains the majority share. January data indicated that Google’s market share had increased slightly to 67 per cent, from 66.7 per cent. In comparison, Bing’s share of the market increased by 0.2 per cent to 16.5 per cent. Data for Yahoo indicated that its market share had decreased slightly to 12.1 per cent.
The top five services used for search in January also include the Ask network with 2.8 per cent of the market share and AOL with 1.7 per cent. Although Microsoft Bing, which was launched in 2009 has held a steady market share, it can’t compete with its rival Google. An analyst from Gabriel Consulting Group, Dan Olds said:
“This tells me that Google still hasn’t been challenged by Microsoft. It turns out that search is sticky.
“People got used to using Google and it became their go-to search engine for all time. Google search is also embedded in all sorts of other Web sites, which gives them even more users.”
As the market leader, Google remains the key component in any company’s search engine optimisation programme, whether the company is in Liverpool or Leeds. Although CEO of Yahoo, Marissa Mayer, has announced a renewed effort and large investment into Yahoo search, it is unlikely that it will replace Google as the main thrust of a SEO campaign just yet.
