Google moves to compare car insurance

A new service has been launched by Google to compare prices of car insurance, making a pledge to customers of improved privacy and transparency. When users type the phrase “car insurance” into Google’s search engine, Google’s comparison service will appear above the other search results. This could have a dire effect on other car insurance comparison companies, who will possibly have to amend their SEO campaign in order to appear among the top results.

Early in 2012 Google also launched a bank account and credit card comparison tool, with more products of this nature expected later on. Google has stated that its comparison service for car insurance will help users to buy the car insurance that matches their requirements, by asking users to choose specified services rather than automating the process. Some comparison services will add a high excess amount and not include extra services like courtesy cars in order to make the premiums cheaper, although buyers may be unaware. Google has pledged to respect confidentiality and not sell personal information to third parties, making the same pledge on behalf of its insurers. Prices provided by insurers will also be monitored to ensure that quotes aren’t inflated when they leave the Google comparison service.

The service will be introduced gradually so it may be some time before users see the Google car insurance comparison tool. The introduction of this tool could make some SEO jobs more complex, with insurance companies in the UK, including Liverpool having to consider their search engine optimisation.
