Google moves into airline businesses

Thursday 1st March 2012 was the day the revised privacy policy from Google came into force, and also the day that Google moved into the world of airline reservations. Partners Cape Air, a small carrier located in Massachusetts, and Google, have announced that a platform created by ITA Software would be used for air reservations. ITA Software was acquired by Google in July 2010.

The new system has replaced a system that had been in place for 48 years, and now offers an improved user experience. Travellers will find it easier to make bookings for all trips, both single and round trips, in addition to being able to make amendments to bookings and journeys. The new booking system also boasts an improved and secure service.

The Cape Air and Nantucket Airlines websites have undergone a transformation with a redesign. The platform of the Cape Air website collects personal data from customers so that it can tailor the service provided to each customer. The technology has also been designed to allow the system to change along with the airline.

Initially, the acquisition of ITA Software by Google was opposed by a number of travel companies, which included Fairlogix and Expedia, as they believed that the collaboration would create fewer choices for consumers and online travel search would be negatively affected.

Travel companies from all areas, including Chester and other UK cities, may have to consider amending their search engine optimisation procedures if they aren’t to be affected by changes introduced by Google.
