Google Maps to notify users if they are too late

American search company Google has updated its Maps service to warn users if the place they are travelling to will close before they arrive.

This latest update will send the user a notification if they are scheduled to arrive at a location after closing time. The changes may well come in handy to many people, especially those who have trouble with their timekeeping!

It can be used as a tool to save both time and effort, if you are in two minds about whether or not you will make it to your destination before it shuts.

The Californian tech firm – predominantly known for its search engine, which naturally keeps search engine optimisation companies on the ball – revealed this latest change to Google Maps in its app update log, stating that users would receive a warning message if the closing time for a business falls prior to their ETA. From here, users will be able to cancel the planned navigation, or continue regardless.

This feature will only work with destinations like local businesses and places of interest that have listed their opening hours on their Google My Business pages, so it may act as an incentive for such places to create or update their current listings.

This new feature is currently only available to devices utilising Android. This is despite the iOS Maps app only receiving an update earlier this month, so it remains to be seen if the feature will be rolled out to other versions of the app.
