Search giant Google has released a new wireless charger for certain models in its range of mobile devices.
Available only across the US and Canada for the time being, the gadget is capable of charging the Nexus 4 and 5 smartphones, as well as the Nexus 7 tablet computer, and has a retail price of $49.99.
The charger comes in the form of a black cube measuring just 6 x 6 x 1.25cm and is available to purchase from Google’s online Play store.
Called the ‘Qi’ charger – pronounced ‘chee’ – the item is boxed with a micro USB cable, 9W 1.8A AC adaptor and comes with a warranty card.
While certainly hi-tech, the device doesn’t appear to offer any additional benefits when compared with traditional charger cables – other than the convenience of allowing users to simply place their mobile device within the charger’s range, rather than physically plugging it in.
Along with the Qi charger, Google has also launched a range of new cases for the Nexus 5.
In a review of the smartphone published in the Telegraph, Matt Warman, the newspaper’s Head of Technology, said the model is the best within its price range.
Warman believes the Nexus 5 proves not only that Google’s mobile software is able to power a number of premium devices available for a decent price; it also shows the Californian web giant is capable of leading the industry with ideas so innovative, they are likely to appear in smartphones made by other tech firms.
Sales figures for the company’s Nexus 5 model only serve to highlight the need for brands to ensure they use a responsive web design strategy to make it easy for customers to access their industry news feeds and sales platforms with ease on mobile devices.
