There has been a considerable level of anticipation in the last few months regarding Google’s strategy for implementing artificial intelligence (AI) into its products and services. This has mainly arisen from the emergence of the ChatGPT chatbot created by OpenAI, which has begun to receive billions in funding from Microsoft, a primary rival of Google.
Now, it seems, we have a much clearer idea of what Google’s next steps will be in what may be turning into a battle of the AI-powered search engines. Google has launched Bard, an experimental AI chatbot, powered by its conversation technology known as LaMDA, which launched just over 18 months ago.
On the surface, Bard appears to work similarly to how ChatGPT currently operates, with users inserting a written prompt to the software that is answered by the artificial intelligence’s language models and extensive knowledge capacities. In a blog post, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai said about Bard’s capabilities:
“Bard can be an outlet for creativity, and a launchpad for curiosity, helping you to explain new discoveries from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to a 9-year-old, or learn more about the best strikers in football right now, and then get drills to build your skills.”
The initial lightweight model of Bard is being released through LaMDA, allowing Google to continuously improve the service. Then, it seems likely that Google will aim to transition this technology into its primary search engine products, which has the potential to change the way we use artificial intelligence and search engines forever. However, with Microsoft appearing as eager as ever to implement ChatGPT into Bing as soon as possible, we may have a search engine battle on our hands before we know it.
While AI has the potential to change search engines as we know them, as a business owner, this should not affect your approach to gaining high rankings on search results. For professional SEO guidance that could change the face of your business, speak to our team at Engage Web today.
