Google glasses may benefit from virtual keyboard

Google’s Augmented Reality glasses, which are expected to be available to the public by 2014, could be fitted with a virtual keyboard. Google’s explanation of how the glasses could be controlled by a virtual keyboard, was discovered in a patent filing recently published. By installing a camera and a projector into the Project Glass AR glasses, information could be input by a user by tapping on their hand or arm.

According to the patent, called “Methods and Systems for a Virtual Input Device”, the virtual keyboard would enable the user to input data using any surface and not just the arm or hand. The projector would possibly be fitted onto the arm of the glasses, while the camera would be fitted to the alternate arm and would interpret movement of the fingers to feed back to the central processing unit. Various types of keyboard may be displayed by the projector onto a surface, including a QWERTY keyboard. In other instances it may also be possible to display a numeric keypad. The patent filing reads:

“A pattern for a virtual input device can be projected onto a ‘display hand’ of a user, and the camera may be able to detect when the user uses an opposite hand to select items of the virtual input device.”

Although it isn’t yet known whether the virtual keyboards will become a reality, the potential for the feature would be huge for businesses managing a SEO campaign. As it becomes possible for even more people to engage with the web whilst mobile, the search engine optimisation of a company website is crucial.
