Google now allows businesses to create their own pages on its Google+ social network platform.
Before now this was not possible, with only US motor giants Ford General Motors having beta sites. However, in a move which is surely targeted at Facebook’s monopoly in the area, there could be a huge boost to firms already embracing search engine optimisation (SEO) as part of their online marketing strategy.
It represents somewhat of a change of direction for the US search engine giant, with their Senior Vice President, Vic Gundotra claiming:
“So far Google+ has focused on connecting people (but now) we want to (help) build relationships with (everything) – from local businesses to global brands – so we’re rolling out Google+ Pages worldwide.”
For the first time too, Google+ pages will be included in the search results. This is a very clear indication that they want brands, big and small, to use the platform on a large scale.
There is little to suggest it won’t work.
By including Google+ pages in their search results, those companies opting to have a presence are sure to achieve better results. As ever though, content and its relevancy will still be the most critical aspect.
There is more good news for online marketers too, as the behaviours and history of those clicking through to a company’s plus page will be available for analysis. However, Google are adamant that no personal data or IP information will be passed on.
Taking part in the launch are a number of globally recognised organisations. One of these is the Muppets. It is unlikely that any of the early exponents will be associated with such a moniker though.
