Google cars are on the streets of England

If you’ve been out on the roads recently you might have seen the Google cars photographing the area. Cars branded with Google and featuring cameras on their roofs have been seen in cities throughout the country, including Chelmsford and Reading.

The cars are taking pictures for Google’s ‘street view’, which shows pictures of the streets of the world. If you’re wondering what this is about, Google isn’t content with indexing the Internet, it wants to index the world, including outside your home!

According to Google, 25 UK cities have already been covered and they’re hoping to cover the majority of UK cities before the end of 2010.

If you’d like to keep an eye out for the Google cars (maybe to avoid the cameras in case you end up as a search result) they’re coloured black and feature a tripod on the roof, which takes a 360 degree image.

The photos taken by the cars are put together by Google to create a map of the world, at street view.

Google cars have also been spotted in the North West, including towns such as Blackburn and Bolton.
