Google boosts growth of Facebook in Brazil

Recent speculation that Google may have been responsible for the huge boost in success for Facebook in Brazil has surfaced, as the social networking site overtakes Orkut for the first time. Orkut is a social networking site that is operated and owned by Google, created by Orkut Buyukkokten.

Although Orkut was originally hosted in California, the social networking site is now managed in Brazil, which is where more than half its users are based. Since the recent filing for its Initial Public Offering, Facebook has tripled the number of users in Brazil to reach 36 million, more than Orkut. Andrew Lipsman from comScore expressed amazement at the rapid rise to the top for Facebook, although some analysts are crediting Google for the success. As Orkut was the first social networking site in Brazil, people would have a reason to gain Internet access and purchase computers. As the economy developed and readily available credit made it easier to gain access to the Internet, the site soon becoming huge in Brazil as it had a language option for Portuguese and was easier to use.

However, as Orkut became popular and more users came on board, criminal activity became prevalent and issues like online security and privacy became a concern. Facebook arrived with the ability to make contact with people other than Brazilians, offering new games and applications for users, soon to become the number one social networking site in Brazil.

Google and Facebook are both popular all over the world, from Manchester to Madagascar which is why businesses must create an SEO campaign that features both, for search engine optimisation and social media.
