Google have revealed their new filter, which will let users see search results that are text-only.
The filter will allow users to further refine their search, which will return a results page with only text-based results.
The new Web filter will sit alongside other filter options, including Images, Videos, News and Maps, underneath Google’s search bar. Some users may need to select “More” from the row of filter options to gain access to it.
Internet users that remember when Google first launched will recognise the simpler, more streamlined results page, free of images, product advertisements and other rich media.
The rollout of this new filter follows demands from old-school search engine users who prefer the more traditional results page.
In a recent statement, Google’s Search Liaison, Danny Sullivan, said:
“We’ve added this after hearing from some that there are times when they’d prefer to just see links to web pages in their search results, such as if they’re looking for longer-form text documents, using a device with limited internet access, or those who just prefer text-based results shown separately from search features.”
The filter will be available globally and is expected to take place across the next few days.
In light of the addition of this new filter, it’s important that we pay close attention to the title tags and meta descriptions that appear across the pages on our website.
If the searcher’s perspective isn’t being influenced by media-rich results or featured snippets, title tags and meta descriptions must be properly optimised to capture the searcher’s attention.
