Google announces accessibility not direct ranking factor

In a recent Google Search Central SEO office-hours hangout, which took place on 25th March, Google’s John Mueller told the audience that if you improve your website’s accessibility, it will not directly impact on its search rankings.

Even though Google doesn’t use accessibility as a ranking factor, it is still essential that your website is accessible for your visitors, as sites that have poor accessibility can cause visitors to bounce off your website and go back to search engines to find a better website. This has a direct impact on the bounce rate of your site, and can affect your business’ online sales, as customers will turn to competitors instead of purchasing or contacting your business.

This announcement is quite interesting for search engine optimisers (SEOs), as there is a fine balance between accessibility and page experience, which is now a ranking factor for Google on both mobile and desktop. Therefore, making sure that visitors to your website have a good user experience is essential to help improve your site’s performance in search results. You can find out more about the importance of page speed and user experience here.

This announcement does not mean that Google’s algorithm will not take accessibility into account in the future, as its algorithms are continually being improved. Therefore, making sure that your website is fully accessible will give you an advantage over competitors who may not have good accessibility, ensuring your site is user friendly and that visitors stay on it longer.

At Engage Web, we design and create websites that have accessibility in mind to make sure that your users have a good experience.
