According to research recently conducted by Gartner, around one billion tablets and smartphones worldwide will be using Google Android by 2014. The research indicated that the number of PCs and devices using Microsoft Windows products will be 397 million in 2014, while 359 million devices will use Apple products by next year. Gartner carried out the research as part of its forecast updates for 2010 to 2017. Although the number of devices used for computing would increase this year to 2.4 billion units, the market for PCs would drop as users turn to tablets which are dropping in price and are much faster.
Research which has been carried out by Telsyte also indicates that tablets were becoming increasingly popular, like Microsoft Surface and Apple iPad. In a statement Gartner said:
“This is not a temporary trend induced by a more austere economic environment; it is a reflection of a long-term change in user behaviour. Worldwide tablet shipments are forecast to total 197 million units in 2013, a 69.8 per cent increase from 2012.”
Search engine optimisation techniques may have to be revised as the number of users switch to mobile devices and tablets. According to Gartner, users will choose a tablet as their main device for computing, to accompany their mobile phone rather than select a traditional PC. The survey also indicates that sales of smartphones are increasing as they become more affordable. However, the survey indicated a fall in sales for the BlackBerry, as Gartner forecasts a 10 per cent reduction in 2013.
