Google adds another new feature to its Maps app

A new Google Maps app feature will allow users to save certain locations and send them to their friends.

This latest update has been designed to make it easier for users to make social plans. The feature will allow users to create a list of their favourite locations and share them with their contacts. It has been designed so that it is easier for users to remember their favourite venues, and create any social plans, whether that is a weekend trip, night out or a holiday. Furthermore, the function could also prove to be useful to people who are relocating to a new area.

Users of Google Maps will be able to add a place to a list by simply tapping on their chosen venue and hitting the ‘save’ option that appears. This will automatically save the location to one of the tool’s many pre-set lists which include ‘Favourites’, ‘Starred Places’ and ‘Want to Go’.

As well as this, users can add their own custom lists, which will be located in the ‘Saved’ tab in the ‘Your Places’ section of the Maps side menu. Special icons for saved locations will also appear on the map. To share a list, a user will simply have to tap on the share button to send to other users.

In recent months, the search giant has added a few new features to Maps that will make it much more useful to users, who may view it as simply a map or even a cheap sat-nav. In January this year, the company added a new function that would inform users about the availability of car parking spaces at their chosen destination. Furthermore, a few months earlier, in November, it updated its services to include showing how busy certain amenities are in real time and what the general peak times and quieter times are of places like bars, gyms and shops based on past historical data.

It has also introduced a function for its Android app that allows a user to search for something when they have no signal and then returns the results of the search when the device redetects a connection.

The introduction of the location lists, and the Popular Times feature in particular, indicate that Google is thinking about more than just potential drivers with its services. These features are making the service more of an information guide that can be useful to anyone going anywhere, regardless of whether or not they need to use a map to get there.

The list feature is due to roll out on both Android and iOS versions of the Google Maps app in the coming days.
