Facebook used as a source of gift inspiration by UK shoppers

According to Facebook, around 12 percent of its users claim to have bought gifts which they originally saw in their news feeds.

The social giant has predicted that this year will see another ‘mobile Christmas’, with many consumers using their smartphones and tablet computers to browse retail sites and pick out gifts throughout the festive season.

Research carried out by global marketing firm Warc has shown that around 84 percent of all presents purchased are bought by mothers, and further studies have suggested that almost half (48 percent) of the UK’s mums start their Christmas shopping as early as October.

The vice president of Facebook Europe, Middle-East and Africa, Nicola Mendelsohn, said:

“Mums are constantly on the move at Christmas, messaging friends and family, sharing plans and looking to perfect gift ideas to make sure the big day is a success.

“The convenience of Facebook on mobile means that whether at home on the sofa or rushing around the shops, Mums can connect and keep in touch with the latest from their friends and family.”

With so many Facebook users turning to the social network for gift recommendations, it’s important for brands to integrate the site fully into their existing website marketing strategies.

In a bid to support businesses which regularly use Facebook to engage with their customers and increase site traffic, the Californian firm recently announced the launch of a hub to promote quality content published by SMEs.
