Facebook unveils new anti-bullying tools

In a move that is sure to put a different complexion on internet reputation management for individuals and businesses alike, Facebook has restructured the way that it handles online bullying.

The site has lifted the lid on a new, innovative ‘Safety Centre’, which features tools for students, parents and teachers to use to combat the ever growing tide of harassment, which is in part fuelled by the relative anonymity granted by the Internet.

According to the site’s blog, the new features will include

“new educational videos, external resources from renowned experts, downloadable materials for people to share and discuss, and more”

A recent spate of suicides has been linked to Facebook, like that of 39 year old builder Christopher Herbert from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

Online harassment is a very real problem, and is not only directed at individuals. As social media sites have become an integral part of any business’s online marketing strategy, this has exposed them to disproportionally harsh criticism from unhappy customers. Online reputation management is something that experts in search engine optimisation usually address; after all, any business would want to appear high in Google’s results for the right reasons. Even-handed handling of complaints is vital for SEO.

So far, it’s unknown if Facebook intend to clampdown on this particular type reputation dismantling, but its latest initiative has won the support of Barack Obama.

Facebook added:

“Our goal is to encourage a conversation around safety so people can make smart choices wherever they are. Over time, we’ll continue to invest significant time, energy and money in adding content and tools to our Safety Centre.”

  • I’m glad attention is being brought to this. Ron Bachman is a motivational speaker whose legs were amputated at the age of 4, he was bullied in school for looking different, he overcame it and today he travels around the country speaking at schools teaching kids to be tolerant and accepting, no matter how different people are. Visit http://www.ronniebachman.com, I encourage you to check out his Facebook fan page and read the hundreds of posts from kids he has inspired and helped, !/pages/Walk-This-Way-Ronnie-Bachman/145199728845117. Please help spread the word to “walk this way.”
