Global networking giant Facebook has decided to get rid of two of its standalone apps that appear to have been a flop – Poke and Camera.
It has been confirmed by the social media site that the two programs will no longer be available for download.
Facebook Poke was originally launched in December 2012, and its demise has not been a surprise to many after it received a lacklustre response – possibly down to the success and dominance of Snapchat, a similar type of service, which was garnering a lot of attention when Poke was launched.
Both apps were designed to see images sent to users permanently deleted after being viewed. However, it is rumoured that Facebook engineers took just 12 days to build the app, suggesting that it was not on the social network’s list of priorities.
The other app to be withdrawn, Camera, is also unlikely to cause much of an uproar. The software allowed users to upload several photographs to their Facebook news feeds simultaneously, as well as view images uploaded by friends, making it a carbon copy of Instagram, which Facebook purchased for £599 million in 2012.
Although these two programs have been retracted and are unlikely to be missed by the public, standalone apps are something that Facebook wishes to continue its interest in. The latest development to come from the company is Facebook Paper, with which users can “explore and share stories” with a selection of photos. This has been successful thus far, even though it has yet to be released in the UK.
