Facebook Graph Search to change the face of social media

A new tool launched by Facebook is set to revolutionise the way that people use the social media network. Graph Search will let users search for news, messages, pictures and posts, providing a new route to finding information on Facebook, according to the chief executive and founder Mark Zuckerberg. Although the new search facility for Facebook could lure users away from Google, Zuckerberg stressed that the focus would be on improving the user experience, with the focus on business applications at a later date.

As Graph Search is rolled out, users will be able to search for photos, people, interests and places, before being able to index all content on Facebook. Zuckerberg also pointed out that the facility was a “beta” product which would develop over the coming years in response to how it was used. Zuckerberg said:

“Graph Search is designed to take a precise query and return to you the answer, not links to other places that might take you to the answer.”

During the early days, Graph Search may not find results for a search, but will take the user to Microsoft Bing. One aspect of the new facility which may be of use to those who work in the search engine optimisation field is being able to search for the preferences of a particular group; for instance, which TV programme is most watched by doctors. The SEO campaign of businesses up and down the country, including Chester will have to be amended to facilitate the new Facebook feature as it improves.
