Cowboy SEO

Cowboy SEO

It’s a sad fact about modern living, but many of us feel totally helpless when it comes to practical jobs such as fixing a car or any DIY that goes beyond constructing an IKEA bookcase. The image of a workman beholding your efforts at fixing/destroying something in your home, whilst rubbing his chin and asking you which cowboy did you get in to do the job, before telling you it’s going to cost a lot to fix, is a cliché – but it happens often.

The idea of causing more harm than good by doing it yourself in order to save money is not one that would appeal to any rational person, yet some people will still go ahead and try anyway. There’s nothing wrong in acknowledging the limits of your own experience and understanding and calling in a professional to get the job done.

Take search engine optimisation, for example. Like any DIY job, there is plenty of advice available on the Internet telling you how to go about doing it effectively. Just like other practical jobs such as car maintenance, there are now evening classes you can attend which claim to give a thorough grounding in SEO. However, where there is only one correct way to change a carburettor, there are many, many different ways to approach an SEO campaign, and a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

If you set about optimising your company’s website for search engines based on your knowledge garnered from one forum, or one evening class, you may experience some results by fine tuning your keywords and being active on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. However, without experience there’s a very good chance you will do more harm than good – at best, it will hardly scratch the surface of the potential on offer. Fresh, search engine friendly content for your site is crucial to any SEO campaign, along with news, article submissions, ethical link building and keeping a close eye on the competition’s SEO tactics. What seems like a simple DIY job all of a sudden becomes one for a reputable search engine optimisation company.

If you’re looking to expand your business on the web, it’s best to have the professionals on board from the start – you also get to avoid the ‘cowboy speech’.

  • Aww I was hoping this would be some juicy gossip about some dodgey practices from a ‘renown’ SEO company rather than a bit of a sales pitch. Still better luck next time 😉
