Could SEO be more sustainable with poetry?

As revealed on the BBC website’s ‘Ten Things’ magazine section a couple of weeks ago, it was discovered that Regen SW has got its very own poet. Charged with raising the profile of the South West England renewable energy agency, it seems a strange relationship.

But is it?

It is certainly a novel way of getting an organisation noticed, which is good. More particularly though, it is a very cuddly, organic, esoteric and holistic approach.

However, there is a chance that it serves a far bigger purpose than that alone, certainly in the world of search engine optimisation. Take a look at the opening stanza of the debut poem, ‘The Shock of the New’:

“An exploded moment of the consternation and confusion turned to recognition and excitement on seeing my first solar farm”

Bingo! Solar farm covered off there which, together with the page URL and meta tagging, should rank well.

In reality though, the complete work is not geared towards SEO. There are mentions of turning light into electricity and even a mention of PV (solar panels), but some would say that it is not the most optimised of text.

It is likely that it is not intended to be. However, that does not mean that SEO content cannot go down a more poetic route.

It already does in many respects of course, with the prevalent use of synonyms, the consistent extenuation of detail, and the comfortable repetition of keywords.

Where perhaps SEO content creation can really learn from poetry is the flowing construct good examples of the art have, and the way voice and perspective changes; both fundamentals when writing for a dynamic audience.
