Audio chat room app Clubhouse has unveiled its first feature allowing people to make money on the app.
Called “Payments”, the new feature gives users the ability to send funds to their favourite hosts. As of April 5, all users of the app can send payments to hosts, although only a select number of users can receive funds at the moment. In a statement on its website, the app said on this:
“We’ll be rolling out the ability to receive payments in waves, starting with a small test group today. Our hope is to collect feedback, fine-tune the feature, and roll it out to everyone soon.”
To send a payment to a creator, all you need to do is:
1. Go to the profile of the user you’d like to send money to – they must have the Payments feature enabled
2. Click “Send Money”, which will appear at the bottom of the screen
3. Enter the payment amount you’d like to send – the first time you send a payment, you’ll need to set up a debit or credit card
4. Click the big green button, and that’s it!
Clubhouse has reassured users that, bar a card processing fee – which is taken by its payment partner Stripe and is added to the amount of money being sent – all funds will go directly to the recipient, and the app won’t take any of it.
The fact that Clubhouse isn’t taking a cut of the money will no doubt be an enticing detail for content creators, and it’s a clever move by Clubhouse to keep its top users on the app. This is even more important with the release of Twitter’s rival app Spaces, and both Facebook and LinkedIn have been reported by Social Media Today to be working on their own offerings too. With all three social networks already having vast numbers of active users, and Clubhouse still being an invite-only offering, releasing this monetisation feature is a cleverly timed move to keep people on the app.
Clubhouse also announced that this will be the “first of many” ways it will be introducing for creators to make money on the app, but whether its users are willing to send funds is another story, and time will tell. Business should, however, always keep their eye on new online monetisation options like this.
