One of the disadvantages of moving from Facebook to Google+ is the work involved in transferring your Facebook friends to Google+. Mohamed Mansour, a programmer, has launched a Chrome extension which simplifies and automates the whole process. However, the terms of service for Facebook users states implicitly that:
“You will not collect users’ content or information, or otherwise access Facebook, using automated means (such as harvesting bots, robots, spiders or scrapers) without our permission.”
The Chrome extension is named Facebook Friend Exporter, and will let you transport information made available to you by your friends over to Google+. Using Google Takeout, you can gather information about your contacts from the social networks that you are using, which is testament to Google supporting openness. The powers that be at Facebook don’t agree with this policy, although you are only taking the information that was supplied to you by your contacts.
Although there have been 15,000 downloads of the extension, Mansour doesn’t guarantee that you won’t be banned from Facebook. As your address book on Gmail is used for Google+ you can import details of friends’ website, birthday, email address, phone number and name directly from Facebook. You can then add them to your ‘circles’.
Importing details of friends across to different social media networks is time consuming, and the warring between Google and Facebook can make some SEO jobs seem bigger than others. Social media is an essential component in search engine optimisation, forming the basis of a good SEO campaign.
