Christmas shopping made easier as Google improves product search

Google has made significant improvements to its product search facility, just in time for Christmas gift shopping. On 23rd November, Google altered its price comparison service, Google Product Search in readiness for Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving which traditionally signals the start of Christmas shopping.

Google will now list products which it believes users are searching for, a ‘best match’ feature. Previously, when users looked for a product, they would be able to narrow down a search by using filters to search by price, or whether a product was available locally. Google has improved this facility to enable searches by brand and other features of a product. For instance, a computer could be searched for using brand name, processor type and operating system. Clicking on a link to the product chosen will provide further information which includes customer reviews, specifications, prices and availability. Basic information about the product you have selected will be displayed on a new information bar on the page.

To ensure you purchase the latest version of a product, the date that the item was first shown on Google Product Search will be featured, indicating whether you are looking at an up to date product, or something that is now a little dated. This enhancement to Google Product Search could make a number of SEO jobs much more complicated. There are now many other factors to be considered when creating an optimum search engine optimisation strategy for products, especially during busy shopping periods like Christmas.
