Within the next couple of months, it’s been announced that Microsoft will be integrating ChatGPT to Bing search results, but what does this mean and why is it being added to the search engine?
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT has been sending ripples through the digital marketing industry since being released by OpenAI back in November. ChatGPT uses content from the internet pre-2021 so that it can answer questions with remarkable accuracy, although it does tend to have difficulty in giving data in response to some specific queries and brand new trending topics. We experimented with the tool last more to see how it got on with poetry and business taglines.
Having ChatGPT added to Microsoft’s search engine seems a natural step as Microsoft has invested $1bn (£843m) in OpenAI. Microsoft is hoping to release ChatGPT to Bing by the end of March as part of ambitious plans to dominate the search engine market, taking over from its much bigger rival Google.
What does this mean for SEO?
With Microsoft releasing ChatGPT into its search engine, this could affect your website’s performance in Bing search results – especially if you have informative content ranking highly in Bing. The new ChatGPT feature could find itself above your listing in the search results and stop people from clicking through to your website.
However, with Bing only currently having a small percentage of the search engine market share, it might be comforting to website owners to learn that Google appears to have no immediately plans of a similar nature. Search Engine Land notes that, despite important meetings about ChatGPT (described as “code red” by the New York Times) Google already has advanced AI and machine learning likely to be able to compete or outdo the ChatGPT platform.
Also, you can already integrate ChatGPT to Google using a browser extension, which adds a small widget to the right of the search results giving you the answer from OpenAI.
