Blog post sparks rumours of imminent Google smartwatch release

Google’s upcoming smartwatch could be made available as soon as the end of this month, according to reports.

The web giant is believed to be planning a Halloween release date for its eagerly anticipated wrist-mounted device – a launch that coincides with the introduction of KitKat, version 4.4 of its Android mobile operating system.

The smartwatch is to bear the ‘Nexus’ name, in keeping with the company’s current branding conventions for its series of smartphones and tablet computers.

Rumours of the impending release date quickly spread following a post on Google+ from Artem Russakovskii, a blogger for news site Android Police.

According to the gossip, features of Android 4.4 will include Google Home, an app that could serve as a hub for all of the company’s other services, such as YouTube and Google Maps.

Other reports have pointed to the possibility of Google’s next smartphone, the Nexus 5, also coming out at the end of this month.

However, it is worth noting that the release date for the smartwatch is yet to be confirmed, and several other dates supported by rumours have since been and gone.

While details of the device are scarce, the frenetic pace of the rumours gives testament to consumers’ voracious appetite and enthusiasm for new hardware from the company.

Innovative mobile devices have reshaped the way brands engage with consumers and put together website marketing strategies; however, it is still too early to say how the smartwatch could affect the average user’s approach to browsing the web and using social media.

Google isn’t the only tech giant fanning the flames of the relatively untapped smartwatch market. Apple, which recently overtook Coca-Cola as the world’s most valuable brand, is also rumoured to be developing its own wrist-mounted computer.
