Bing and Facebook talk social media to Parliament

Representatives of the search and social media industries recently appeared in Parliamentary discussions on the influence of the social media. The Parliament and Internet Conference for 2011 focused on the influence of the internet in real-world society, discussing the role of the social media in a democratic society, among other topics.

Dave Coplin, Head of Search for Bing, talked about the potential of social media for users in smaller UK towns, noting that increased use of social media could connect anyone from rural areas with the global marketplace. Coplin noted that although at the moment social media has a personal bent, he envisions users performing more work tasks via social media over time.

If people come to rely on the social media for their daily work as well as personal lives, as Coplin suggests, it is likely that social media campaigns will become even more important to the average business’s internet marketing plans. The influence of social media is a topic close to heart for many SEOs and internet marketers, who have long been aware of the possibilities these new social hubs represent. Many site owners have been exploring the potential of social media for both its direct benefits and support for their search engine optimisation campaigns.

Facebook’s Director of Policy for the EU, Richard Allan, Simon Hampton, Director of Policy for Google’s Northern Europe section and RIM’s Director of Platform and Product Marketing Anthony Payne were among those who participated in the panel discussions on social media.

The event, which takes place annually, was held in Porticullis House.
