Author to publish short story via Twitter

David Mitchell, the author of Cloud Atlas, has revealed that he will be publishing his next piece of work on social networking site Twitter in 140-character instalments.

The British novelist’s latest work is a short story titled ‘The Right Sort’, which will be published 20 tweets at a time, twice a day over a period of seven days, equating to a total of 280 tweets.

The author has revealed that the story revolves around a teenage boy and his discovery of valium, with a few teaser tweets already posted on his official Twitter account @david_mitchell.

Although Mitchell admits that he is not an avid user of any form of social media, he explained that he has accepted the website as a clever tool for internet marketing.

Mitchell’s publishers encouraged him to sign up to the popular networking platform in order to promote his new novel to be released in September, The Bone Clocks. The account was set up in April this year, with the aim of promoting a series of scheduled events prior to its release.

It has been highlighted that the story to be published online is not connected to the novel that will be released at the end of the summer, as the Man Booker-shortlisted novelist does not believe that it would be fair to his readers to have to purchase the novel to understand the series of online postings.

News providers have stated that this is not the first of its kind. Award-winning author Jennifer Egan published a short story on the site, with other authors, including Neil Gaiman and Phillipa Gregory, have also been known to experiment with ‘Twitterfiction’.
