Rumours are going around suggesting hackers from the Anonymous group have successfully attacked two key news feeds run by the North Korean regime, as tensions increase in the region.
According to reports, the content being posted on the Uriminzokkiri Flickr and Twitter accounts was not exactly typical. Usually, pictorial content on the sites is full of the chunky Kim Jong-un meeting military leaders, whilst text lauds the leader and the country.
On Thursday April 4 2013, however, a picture of the baby-faced 30-year-old appeared on the Flickr site, having been photo-shopped to include a pig’s snout and Mickey Mouse tattoo. The strap-line read:
“Threatening world peace with ICBMs (Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles) and Nuclear weapons/wasting money while his people starve to death.”
Another post read:
“We are Anonymous”
A statement said to be from the activists suggested that another 15,000 attacks had taken place, though there has, as yet, been no authentication.
Despite the self-imposed exile from much of the modern world, North Korea has embraced social media. Its Twitter account, for example, now has over 17,000 followers; a figure many businesses in the UK would love to reach.
Attracting thousands of followers to social network accounts and news feeds can be done far more simply than becoming a military state and issuing threats to the world, however.
