Google has released the latest study of Internet searches, the Zeitgeist, which literally translated means ‘time spirit’, 2011. The most popular search terms are revealed for 2011, revealing some surprising results. The Zeitgeist survey reveals the most searched for celebrities, but also the top search phrases.
In 2011, the fastest rising search of events was the royal wedding, although the event of the year didn’t make it into the top ten searches in the UK. The ten most searched for terms in the UK were mostly practical searches, which included YouTube, Facebook, Hotmail, eBay and Google. Individual celebrity searches followed the same pattern, with the fastest rising searches being for Adele, Ed Sheeran and Ryan Dunn, the late American TV actor. The most popular searches however, were for Victoria Beckham, Kim Kardashian and Emma Watson.
Questions are also featured in the survey results, with the fastest rising ‘what is…’ question being ‘What is AV?’ a popular question asked during the period of the referendum. Nick Clegg proved to be less popular, as he was the fastest falling search. According to Google, it reveals the current trend of the web
“through an exploration of the billions of search queries we receive each year. In addition to the year-end Zeitgeist, which highlights the top trends of 2011, we have several tools that give insight into global, regional, past and present search trends.”
The Zeitgeist may prove useful for search engine optimisation, revealing trends of searches. However, although the survey results tell us about the changing pattern of the web, the searches of the future can’t be predicted, making SEO much more complex.
