Maritza’s Barber Shop in Anchorage, Alaska has had a reputation among locals for creating tonsorial works of art for the last six years. However, thanks to the power of social media, for the owner of the barber shop, Willy Ruiz, hair art is becoming increasingly popular among locals and a wider audience. In addition to a new found fame, his work has resulted in a reality TV show called “Barber Battles” for CW Television Network.
The creator of a website based in New York, Barbershopconnect.com, Lee Resnick said during an interview:
“Hair art, the culture, has been sort of an underground thing for the past two to three years, but now I would say it’s really starting to become mainstream quite quickly.”
Resnick has used work by Maritza’s barbers to feature on his website, along with others from Ontario to Ecuador. Ruiz started hair art at the age of 13 when he shaved the logo of “Mortal Kombat” on a classmate’s head. The only symbols he doesn’t shave into hair are gang symbols. As Ruiz had been shaving regular designs for almost 20 years, he had become a little tired but the social media explosion changed all that. Ruiz records his work so that he can launch an iPhone app demonstrating the technique to others.
Businesses utilise the power of social media in their search engine optimisation techniques. As Willy Ruiz demonstrates, any SEO campaign needs the viral abilities of social media sites Facebook, Twitter and others.
