A potential new Instagram feature people have been asking for!

In an attempt to create more ways for their users to share content specifically with their friends, Instagram has a new feature in testing that will allow you to share posts with ‘close friends.’

Close friends lists do already exist on Instagram, but it’s a feature that could only be used for stories and not posts. That is about to change, with Instagram set to provide an option to select the audience your post will be displayed to, similarly to how it does with stories.

This feature will give you the opportunity to create a list of people you consider close friends and will allow you to choose whether you want your post to display to all your followers or just those in your close friends list, using a section called ‘Audience’ to give more of a personal feel to the app.

A spokesperson from Instagram’s parent company Meta said:

“We’re testing the ability for people in select countries to share feed posts with their Close Friends. We’re always exploring new ways for our community to express themselves and connect on Instagram”

Should this test be successful and Instagram begin to roll it out to all users, it could reduce the use of ‘finsta’ accounts (fake Instagram accounts), which are private accounts people use to follow their close friends. People post content to their ‘finsta’ accounts that they don’t want to show to certain followers who they might not know or be close with.

This is certainly a feature that will get people talking and it will be interesting to see how it impacts user experience.
