Attack of the zombie content

Posted on July 24, 2011

Dead content is stalking the net. Thousands of undead articles, shambling across the web, sucking the lifeblood out of unsuspecting websites…

The idea of reanimating a dead article may sound like a bad idea, but zombie content is actually a good thing. While dead content is just a weight on your site, undead content can be of help to your search engine optimisation plans. Don’t believe me? Here’s how.

Undead method 1: zombies

Everyone has a few old articles that didn’t get the attention they deserved. Because of their un-fresh state, they are less valuable to SEO. Sales work is something they can still perform, and they can be used to strengthen your new pages’ relevance to keywords.

Reanimate these pages by putting their links throughout text, at the bottom of new articles, and in a ‘You might also enjoy’ suggestion box. Before you can say ‘zombies are walking down Merseyside main street!’ you will have a much more hard-working site in general.

Undead method 2: vampires

Once you have your league of the walking dead, it’s time to get into the more exciting stuff. When you’ve spent hours on an article and it hasn’t had the SEO impact you desired, there is something you can do to bring it back to vibrant life. Simply rewrite it.

Revamping an article can be a simple matter of rewording it, and perhaps adding an update for readers who came across the first article. Linking back to the old version shows readers you care enough to revisit important topics, and helps your SEO.
