Apple news app to take on Facebook

Posted on June 11, 2015

American technology company Apple has refurbished its news service app in a move to take on social networking giant Facebook as it bids to be the top online news provider.

Global media organisations have already agreed to produce content specifically aimed for this new service, including ESPN, The Daily Mail, The New York Times and The Guardian.

The new service, which is named ‘News’, will replace Apple’s current news app Newstand, which was launched in 2011 and widely regarded as a key tool in supplying news in the smartphone and tablet era. This new platform is set to provide the latest news stories as well as articles and other posts covering more than a million topics. Content posted within this app will be hosted on Apple’s platforms but it will be the publishers who will own and control the formatting of the content.

News will adopt a similar format and design to Flipboard, an app that offers news and other similar content in a magazine-like design that enables users to tailor content based on variables and preferences from a variety of options, including location.

One feature that has lured publishers to this app is that they will be able to place ads within the News app and are permitted to keep 100% of the revenue generated from this platform.

A recent U.S. study revealed that younger people are now sourcing their news from social media networks, with Facebook spearheading this charge. This is just one of the contributing factors to Apple’s latest strategy.
