Android Market rebranded to Google Play

Posted on March 10, 2012

Google’s app store, Android Market has been given a new image, including a new name. However, opinions are divided as a number of experts believe Google has made a smart move, and others believe the word ‘play’ indicates a product which represents fun rather than being taken seriously.

The change of name was announced on 7th March 2012, just as Apple released the latest version of their iPad. Productsavailable in the online store have also been renamed as part of the revamp. Videos, books and music will all be branded with the word ‘play’. For instance, Google Play books, Google Play music.

Google Play can be accessed on PCs, mobile, laptops and Chromebooks. A user can purchase content and access it using any device. Experts in the world of technology consider adding the name Google to the products as a smart move, being recognisable to all. As pointed out by Rich Trenholm, CNET UK news editor, although fans of technology may recognise Android, a number of people will not understand the concept. However, Google is a household name, instantly recognised.

Other experts consider the name Google Play to be more suitable to a child than an adult, conjuring up images of games rather than useful tools to be used for a serious purpose.

Google is always at the forefront of new creations and moves, which can make a number of SEO jobs much more complex. A company’s SEO campaign has to be kept up to date as Google moves ahead with the times.
