Account Activity to monitor use of Google services

Posted on April 13, 2012

A new feature released by Google will enable users to receive a monthly report showing their activity levels of Google services. The new feature will tell users where they were when they signed in to the service – and provide details of the service in use. Users will have to sign up for the new Google service, to receive reports, which are password protected.

Data from user’s accounts will be collated every month to show account activity, including comparisons of services like email from month to month. Google announced:

“We’re introducing Account Activity, a new feature in your Google Account. If you sign up, each month we’ll send you a link to a password-protected report with insights into your signed-in use of Google services.”

Although much of the information collected poses no threat to privacy, some data is of a more sensitive nature, including the most searched for terms and data to show which country the user was in when logging on. However, according to Google the information can be used to increase security of personal accounts, knowing who logged in and from which country. Users may also detect log-ins from devices which they don’t own, enabling them to increase security with two-step verification and changing their password. Google also states that the reports may be deleted from an account if required.

Google is constantly improving availability of services with new technology for users. As the number of Google services continues to play an integral role in people’s lives, the search engine giant will feature in SEO campaigns of businesses world wide.
