A facelift for YouTube

YouTube has been redesigned by Google, creating new channels which users can customize and a home page which is brand new. A spokesman for YouTube, Chris Dale said during an interview with TechNewsWorld, that the company wanted to increase the amount of time people spent on the site, and the introduction of channels will help users to locate their favourite videos.

The channels are to be an integral feature of the newly redesigned YouTube, with some users leaving favourable comments about the new interface and others feeling negative. Dale commented that initial tests show that the new design is popular with the majority of users, although change can be difficult for some people.

On the left of the home page, a list of channels is featured which includes music, popular, trending, sports, science and technology, politics and news. A feed takes pride of place in the centre of the home page, which was initially featured in Cosmic Panda, released in July. If users want to see which videos are being watched by their friends, they can link to Facebook and Google+ accounts to find out. New templates have also been added to channels. In the experimental days of Cosmic Panda, users made suggestions which have now been incorporated, including larger video thumbnails and a grey background.

Google has made many updates and improvements recently to make using Google products easier and a pleasant experience. Some of the changes may necessitate changes to a search engine optimisation campaign, which can make some SEO jobs much harder.
