UK tech wizz designs app which hits US top ten

A news summary App, designed by a UK teenager, has soared into the top ten in the US only hours after being released onto the market.

Summly, the creation of 17-year-old Nick D’Aloisio from London, has some stellar supporters. Those backing it include Stephen Fry, and CEO of Tech City, Joanna Shields.

Rupert Murdoch is also said to be a fan of the innovation, which has secured over $1 million in investment from private funders.

Designed in his time off from School, D’Aloisio has created an algorithm, similar to that used by Google that SEO specialists will know only too well. Interrogating many popular news sites, stories are summarised, whilst users can view the full report with a simple swipe of the finger.

Whilst the App has been largely successful in its early days, it has met with some criticism. Some reviews have suggested its navigation as confusing and unintuitive. However, this has not prevented it attaining an overall 4 star rating.

Whilst the tech behind the tool is something the student is pleased with, so too is its look and feel. He said:

“We worked hard on an interface that looks like nothing else.

“We merged algorithm with beautiful design.”

Building on the basis that people today want information quickly, something which again makes for good search engine optimisation, D’Aloisio has big plans for the future:

“We can really become the de-facto format for news on mobile. People are not scrolling through 1,000-word articles – they want snack-sized information.”

The creator is adamant about having ongoing involvement with the App and the company but, has stated that he intends to remain in education and graduate.
