Facebook’s first office to be opened outside the United States has been welcomed by the Chancellor George Osborne. The new offices have opened in London’s Covent Garden and are viewed as a huge boost to the London technology scene – a growing sector in the Capital.
According to Osborne, the move by Facebook to the UK vindicates the attempts by the government to attract technology companies worldwide to come to the UK for their business. The Chancellor views the move as showing that the social media company has confidence in London, and the entire UK, as a place that welcomes business.
Facebook and other social media companies already play a role in the search engine optimisation of business websites, so the presence of Facebook in the UK will no doubt be celebrated by businesses from Liverpool to London.
The official opening of the Facebook offices presented an opportunity for Osborne to say a few words and he spoke of the determination to invite technology startups and companies like Facebook to have a presence in the UK. As part of the government’s plans to make the UK an attractive option for other companies like Facebook, schools will face an overhaul, with the curriculum being improved towards introducing advanced information and communications technology (ICT) skills.
Osborne said:
“We have relighted the ICT curriculum so instead of pupils just learning how to operate Microsoft Excel or PowerPoint, they are also being taught how to code and build apps.”
