Facebook adds new photo-editing tools

Social networking phenomenon Facebook has begun to add a new range options for making changes to images, many of which are similar to those offered by popular app Snapchat.

For the social site, Snapchat seems to be the acquisition that got away. It attempted to buy the service back in 2013 for £1.9bn, but was unsuccessful, and it seems it is not ready to put this interest to bed.

Since the attempted acquisition, the American company has developed its own version of the self-erasing photo and video service, with Slingshot being launched towards the end of last year.

Back to the present, Facebook is now beginning to roll out numerous photo-editing tools, including filters and stickers.

A magic wand icon will appear in the bottom left corner of the screen, which is a gateway to a new menu that will give users options such as adding filters, cropping and drawing on photos, tagging friends and adding text. Following this, users can reposition stickers and icons that they add in a similar way to Snapchat, before posting them to the site in the normal way, which will see the finished photo appear on the user’s newsfeed.

These new tools are currently only available to those who use the site’s mobile app on iOS devices, with it being unclear how many people have access to it and what regions it has been launched in. These services have been tested in Facebook’s standalone apps in recent months, and are now being built in to the main mobile app.
